Reading: Get Caught Reading started in May of 1999.

The annual campaign is designed to inspire all ages to read. Celebrities join in the fun by sharing what they’re reading, encouraging people to read what their favorite actors, athletes, and musicians are reading.

It’s your turn. Spend time together as a family by reading a book together. Sit down and read while everyone else listens. When you finish the book, watch the movie together and discuss the similarities and differences.

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

Start reading the first novel, The Bad Beginning, and work your way through the others if you want. This juvenile fiction story is sarcastic and suspenseful. Orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sunny end up bouncing from one foster parent or relative to the next, but their cunning Count Olaf is never far away and doing everything he can to gain the fortune their parents left behind.

When it comes to watching the movie, you’re looking for the Jim Carrey film from 2004. Even better, watch the television series on Netflix that starred Neil Patrick Harris. The TV series went for three seasons and covered all of the books rather than just a few.

Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White

This classic tale of a brilliant spider (Charlotte), a young girl (Fern), and the runt piglet that Fern saves is a tearjerker. The story focuses on friendships, life, and death.

Once you’ve read the book, there are two movies you can watch. There’s a cartoon version voiced by Debbie Reynolds and Paul Lynde, or the CGI version starring Dakota Fanning, Julia Roberts, John Cleese, and others.

Nim’s Island by Wendy Orr

Nim is a brave kid by nature, so it’s not a big deal when her dad leaves her alone on their island for a few days. When he doesn’t return, Nim does the only thing she can think of and reaches out for help from an agoraphobic adventure writer.

The movie starred some big names. Abigail Breslin played Nim, while Gerard Butler was her father. Jodie Foster played the agoraphobic author.

Who spends time with your mom and dad when you’re not free? If you work all week and need time on weekends to catch up on chores or get caught reading, you could hire elderly care aides to help your parents instead. By hiring elderly care services, the time you spend with your parents is designated as free time instead of being filled with chores.
