People aged 65 and up, as well as those in need of long-term care, are eligible.

You must fill out an application to find out if you are eligible.

Basic coverage requirements

Residency

To be eligible for MassHealth or other Commonwealth-funded healthcare benefits, you must be a Massachusetts resident.

You meet the residence criteria if and only if:

You live in Massachusetts and intend to stay there, with or without a fixed address, or you have entered Massachusetts with a job commitment or are looking for work.

If you are visiting Massachusetts, you do not meet the residence requirements:

  • For personal enjoyment, such as a trip, or
  • Receiving medical care in a location other than a nursing home
  • Immigration status or citizenship
MassHealth considers your citizenship or immigrant status when determining eligibility for benefits. To be eligible for MassHealth coverage, you must be a U.S. citizen or have an appropriate immigration status. You may be evaluated for less benefits if you do not give this information.

Financially, MassHealth considers your and your spouse’s income and assets. The restrictions regarding income and assets fluctuate depending on the type of MassHealth program.
